Nair, born thanks to stem cells

He was born in Canada, in Toronto, the very first child born thanks to stamina cells. The child, who is 22 days old, is known as Zain Rajani, and was born thanks to the use of a technique experimental developed by Canadian researchers that may also allow the birth of more children by the summer.

It all began with the idea that in some women they neglect to conceive the eggs are too weak to be fertilized. Then the Canadian scientists tried to reinforce them with stem cells obtained from healthy eggs, young cells, which developed making the egg to become fertilized younger in turn.

In May 2021 his mom Natasha Rajani underwent laparoscopic surgery to remove a small part of the ovarian tissue. Experts from the OvaScience center identified useful stem cells and extracted the mitochondria, the ones that give energy to the cell, which they have been placed in weaker eggs which were then employed for in vitro fertilization with her husband’s sperm.

4 eggs they were fertilized but only one developed in the right way and was transferred to the uterus. Nine months later Zain was created. A promising result that allows you to bet on the future: this technique could actually open up new avenues within the fight against infertility. The technique is not allowed in the United States since the use of mitochondria is considered a kind of genetic manipulation, but actually the US experts have shown curiousity about this discovery.

In Canada instead they are proceeding within this direction. 30 women under the age of 40 underwent this procedure at the same fertility center under the guidance of Dr. Robert Casper. 25 of them received an embryo transfer and 15 of these became pregnant, but six subsequently aborted (a percentage which, explains Casper, is still using the average of spontaneous terminations of pregnancy at this age).

Nair may be the first baby born because of the use of these stem cells, but more babies are expected by the summer.
